How marvelous. It turns out that like the quieter, more deconstructionist Westerns that heralded a reflective temperament following the indulgences of 1950s Oaters, Logan seeks to carve out a fairly intimate character study about an aged do-gooder in a country for no old mutants. And the film wildly succeeds at its goals with bloody verve. Seriously, there is so much blood. More miraculous still, though, is that Logan is also without question the best superhero movie in years, and certainly the most ambitious one since Christopher Nolan hung up the cape....

One episode into House of the Dragon, and it’s clear the series is going to return to the ambiguity that made Game of Thrones so compelling—and at times more than a tad disturbing. Take for instance the first big scene between Matt Smith’s Prince Daemon Targaryen and Milly Alcock’s Princess Rhaenyra. Their relationship is that of uncle and niece; the king’s younger brother and his only daughter. But while neither character will verbalize it, they’re technically competitors—imperfect choices to be heir to King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) and the Iron Throne....

As revealed in the latest bit of marketing, Fatman marks the first time someone has looked at Gibson’s often resplendent gray beard and said, “Santa.” The Oscar winning filmmaker who’s also notorious for virulent outbursts is going to portray that not-so-jolly Chris Cringle in this new movie from the writer-directing pair of Eshom and Ian Nelms. The two, who previously helmed Small Time Crime, direct Gibson as a Santa at the end of his ropes....

On March 16, 2001, Christopher Nolan announced himself to the world with the US release of Memento. Not that everyone heard him straight away. Despite garnering rave reviews on the festival circuit, Nolan’s mind-bending jigsaw puzzle of a movie failed to land a major distribution deal in the States. In the end Newmarket Films, the independent production company bankrolling the project, took the plunge and distributed it themselves. Memento went on to earn more than $45 million at the US box office from a $4....

Many Metroid retrospectives, and even some members of the Metroid development team, have since claimed that ending shocked the world by introducing one of the most capable and prominent female gaming heroes at a time when such female protagonists were certainly less common in action games. Whatever we say from this point on, there’s no denying that this ending was unusual for its time and is rightfully seen as not just one of the great early video game endings but a touchstone moment for video game storytelling and character design....

For all those reasons and more, the pressure is on developer MercurySteam and director Yoshio Sakamoto to deliver an epic Metroid tale that also answers the many unresolved questions and unsolved mysteries in the Metroid lore. What, exactly, are those mysterious narrative elements that need to be addressed? Conveniently enough, that’s what we’ll be running through here today. We’re not claiming to have explored every hanging thread in the greater Metroid storyline, but we can’t help but wonder about some significant plot points that we’ve been left to dwell on since we last saw Samus....

This week saw the release of Hardware: The Man in the Machine, the first volume of Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan and J.J. Birch’s origin/revenge tale about genius inventor Curt Metcalf, on ComiXology and other digital platforms. And over the next two weeks, the first two volumes of Icon (A Hero’s Welcome and The Mothership Connection), from M.D. Bright and McDuffie, will go on sale online as well. These three collections were made available to read for free as part of September’s FanDome event, and as you might guess from the quality of the creators, they are spectacular....

The new English-language Mo Dao Zu Shi translation will be published in five volumes, and is being translated by Suika and edited by Pengie. The work will include cover art by Jin Fang, and interior art by Marina Privalova, with each deluxe paperback volume setting American readers back $19.99. Unlike The Untamed, which does not feature any of the explicit sexual content between the two male main characters that is central to the source material, the Mo Dao Zu Shi English-language edition will not be censored, and is rated 17+ for violence, language, and sex....

“Test your might.” These are the words of a minigame in the original Mortal Kombat arcade fighter from 1992. They were meant to signal an interlude between the simple pleasures of digitized sprites spilling buckets of blood. Yet they’ve also become synonymous with a franchise that’s arguably the most popular video game fighter of all-time. The phrase is also a pretty apt description for the various filmmakers who’ve attempted the challenge of taming this crazy dragon on screen....

Usually, these lead to fun B-movie plots that can carry a game or two. Sometimes the sequels just retread the same plot over and over (ie. the Soul Calibur games and King of Fighters), but Mortal Kombat has been able to hold its own for over 25 years due to embracing its own wacky mythology and finding ways to be fresh. Even when they’re literally redoing an earlier story! There’s a reason why the Mortal Kombat story has been told in different forms....

Thus far, Ms. Marvel showrunner Bisha K. Ali has given simple explanations for the change in the title character’s powerset. Where the Kamala Khan of the comics gained the ability to alter the shape and size of her body after exposure to Terrigen Mists released by the Inhumans, the television version uses a bangle to form energy constructs. But in episode three of Ms. Marvel, we get a glimpse of the bangle’s origin, and with it, connections to the larger MCU that go much deeper than previously assumed....

Muppets Now Episode 5 As we reach the fifth and penultimate episode of Muppets Now, my complaints about how tedious it’s getting are a bit deflated due to the wonderful news that after a four-episode stretch, there is no “Okey Dokey Kookin’” segment. Yes, there are still two appearances by the Swedish Chef here, but they’re both fresh and funny gags. They aren’t the same one-note joke stretched out for several minutes and repeated every week....
